[Yokosuka Unusual Journey] Navy Burger and Navy Curry! A day trip around the town with a view of a retro American warship, with a food tour

In stark contrast to the elegant morning we’d had last time at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo, my host suddenly declared, “That’s right, let’s go see the warships in Yokosuka!”

I was truly astonished at this man’s whims. One moment he was surrounded by the aroma of coffee and acting like a true cultured person, and the next moment he was inviting me to a naval base – his behavioral pattern was incomprehensible. However, I had no choice but to accept this as part of my host’s charm. And so, we left this extraordinary, elegant space behind and headed straight for Yokosuka, home to the giant steel ships that dominate it.

I took the Toyoko Line from Nakameguro, then transferred to the JR at Yokohama. After several more trains, I finally arrived at Yokosuka Station. However, when I stepped onto the station platform, the bustle I expected was gone, and I was met with a dreary, empty landscape. My husband tilted his head in surprise, groaning as he looked at Google Maps. It seemed the busiest spot was the one just ahead, Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo Station. Damn, my usual lack of research.

But there was no way we could turn back now. My husband conveniently said, “Well, this is part of the fun of traveling!” and we began trekking along the coast. It was a blazing day. The scorching sun beat down mercilessly, and shimmering heat haze rose from the asphalt. My hooves felt as hot as if I were walking on iron plates. My husband is a man who usually barely drinks any water. Even in this scorching heat, he continued walking calmly without complaining of thirst. What on earth was going on with his hydration? I secretly wondered about his constitution.

A feast of fish and the majesty of battleships

After walking for a while, my husband suddenly exclaimed in admiration, “Wow, there’s a ray swimming!!”

Just as he had been fascinated by black porgy in Hamakanaya, it seemed he really did love fish. However, his joy was short-lived, as we went further and saw several black porgy swimming gracefully along the seawall! It wasn’t just one or two, but a whole school of them, swimming leisurely and seemingly welcoming us. My husband forgot the heat and, like a child again, exclaimed, “Wow, wow!” He had never imagined he’d see so many black porgy in Yokosuka.

And then, farther back, there was the battleship we were looking for, anchored majestically!

The steel hulk floating in the sea was truly breathtaking.

My husband muttered that this alone was enough to make the day’s trip worthwhile. Then, just then, we spotted a submarine slowly emerging from the water!

“Amazing…” he exclaimed in admiration once again. It turns out, if we were going on a warship tour, getting off at JR Yokosuka Station was the right choice. However, we were treated to the unexpected treat of black porgy, so we’ll be happy with that.

Navy Curry or Yokosuka Burger? A Troublesome Gourmet Choice

It was already past lunchtime. My husband, who had only had iced coffee since morning, couldn’t help but feel hungry, saying, “Since we’re in Yokosuka, I really want Navy Curry or a Yokosuka Burger.” However, all we could see were battleships, and no restaurant in sight. We had no choice but to walk under the scorching sun to the location of the battleship “Mikasa.” My husband, please consider my stamina. It must have taken nearly 30 minutes of walking from JR Yokosuka Station to get here. Even I was exhausted. But this man’s obsession with food is truly impressive.

The majestic appearance of the battleship Mikasa, and its perplexing behavior as always

Togo Heihachiro, who defeated the Baltic Fleet
Finally, our destination, the battleship Mikasa, came into view. Its imposing form evokes a sense of the weight of history. My husband was intently reading the Mikasa’s description. The Mikasa was a battleship built during the Meiji era, and it served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War, where it played a glorious role in defeating the Baltic Fleet. It truly symbolizes Japan’s modern history.

But here, my husband’s strange behavior unfolded again. Entering the Mikasa requires an admission fee of 650 yen, but despite reaching the entrance, for some reason, he refused to go inside. Whether it was Mount Nokogiri in Hamakanaya or this Mikasa, it was common for him to change his plans at the last minute, even after coming all the way here. I have no idea whether he was trying to save up the 650 yen, or if there was some other reason.

Instead, my husband bought a towel with a picture of the Mikasa for 800 yen. He didn’t even enter the ship, but he did take it home, so as always, his behavioral patterns are mysterious. I sighed to myself, “Humans are truly strange creatures.”

The Deliciousness of the Yokosuka Burger, and the Exhausted Journey Home

After leaving the Mikasa, we headed to Yokosuka Port Market for lunch.

It seemed to have several restaurants offering local delicacies. Among the various eateries, my husband found his desired hamburger spot, Honey Bee.

Attracted by the “Yokosuka Burger” sign, my husband entered without hesitation and ordered one. It cost 1,200 yen. It took a while for the burger to be served, as it was cooked to order, but the wait only heightened the anticipation.

And when it appeared, it was truly spectacular. A thick patty, crunchy lettuce, tomato, and melted cheese.
My husband opened his mouth wide and took a big bite. A huge smile appeared on his face at that moment.

It was absolutely delicious.
“So, so good! This is what a Yokosuka burger must be!”

As I listened to my husband chewing, I imagined how delicious it must have been. My husband was particularly impressed by the lettuce.

“The lettuce is so salty and delicious! The patty is also perfect. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had such a delicious hamburger…”

With every bite, he groaned like a gourmet, exclaiming “delicious” and “amazing.” I never expected my husband, who normally doesn’t show such high food preferences, to be so impressed. This hamburger must have been incredibly delicious. It must have had a truly authentic flavor, setting it apart from the ordinary hamburgers available on the market.

The End of the Journey, and Anticipation of What’s Next

After a satisfying lunch, we once again set off on our walk to Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo Station. My husband was completely stuffed, his steps heavy as if his earlier energy had been a lie. I, too, was exhausted, overwhelmed by the fatigue of walking around under the scorching sun all morning. However, my husband, ignoring my exhaustion, still seemed to be planning something next.

We finally arrived at Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo Station and boarded the train, heading straight for Tokyo. As I sank back into my seat, memories of our trip ran through my mind one after another. From an elegant cafe in Nakameguro to Yokosuka under the scorching sun. My unexpected encounter with a black porgy, the sight of a majestic battleship, my husband’s strange behavior in front of the Mikasa, and, above all, that delicious Yokosuka burger. Summer memories remain in our hearts forever.

On the train ride home, a mixture of naptime and fatigue, I was dreaming. In my dream, my husband was planning another bizarre trip. Well, it looks like I’ll be dragged around by this man for a while longer. This was the end of my trip around Yokosuka, but I’m sure a new, strange journey will begin soon.
